Its Official – Adobe Air Needs Improvements, and now.
March 1st, 2009It has been about 3-4 months that I’ve been using Adobe Air and I’ve been noticing some things in it that seems to be an issue, and it happens in most, if not, all clients that are Adobe Air. First thing’s first: RAM. Yes, Adobe is widely known for having RAM-Hogging applications, but come on, to the point where a TWITTER client takes up 1.64GB? (refer to last post) There’s no excuse as to why a Twitter client that only has Tweets from following and replies take up almost 1.7GB of memory. Thats more than a whole operating system running on a virtual machine. Second issue – annoying bugs. In all my twitter clients (for OSX), when I type something in, and press shift, then space (usually do when I type a capital letter and press space), the space doesnt move. This really annoys me and sometimes I tweet something like: IWent to the store. As you can see, it gets annoying and I dont like it. Third issue – crashes. I’m SICK of having Adobe Air apps crashing all the time. I cant have an adobe air app more than 2 days without crashing.
-as you can see, there are some things Adobe *needs* to improve on for Adobe Air. Its useful, but needs some updates.

Hi Kevin,
I saw your post and wanted to drop you a quick note and say thank you for expressing your concerns. I wanted to address a few of your points:
1. We’re working closely with the creator of TweetDeck to isolate a memory issue. We expect that the application will be updated soon with the recommended fix. The issue appears related to a particular component being used in the application. While our team does perform many tests related to memory, there are still improvements to be made and we’re working closely with the development to address known issues. Since it’s easy to make an AIR application that consumes a lot of memory, we’re also working on producing best practices and new tools to help developers troubleshoot these issues.
2. If you are interested in helping us make AIR even better, I’d like to invite you into our prerelease program so that you can work more closely with our team to help make AIR better.
3. The shift space issue you are referring to was addressed in our AIR 1.5.1 release which was released last week. Please grab the latest build of AIR: http://get.adobe.com/air/
4. I would like to work with you to identify the crashers you are seeing. Please send me an email with steps if you are able to reproduce them. I would suggest trying AIR 1.5.1 out for a few days to see if they are still happening as we fixed several crashes in 1.5.1. If not, perhaps I could request a crash log from you.
Again, thank you for the note. We’re working hard to improve AIR. Since you have access to my email, do not hesitate to send me an email if you have thoughts on how to improve AIR.
Thanks,
Rob Christensen, Product Manager, Adobe AIR
