A few days ago Google complained that the Internet in the United States was too slow, and who I don’t blame them. Today, though, they announced that they would build experimental, super-high speed Internet networks around the US to make sure that future systems will be able to keep up with online video and other advanced applications. The Speeds? 1GB/second. Yes. 1GigaBit per second. To put it in perspective, you can download the latest version of Ubuntu 9.10, an over 650MB file, in under 10 seconds. You may be thinking that the prices of this type of internet will be around $1,000 a month, but Google also announced that the prices will be competitive to other ISP’s – meaning you can pay maybe $5-10 more for almost 300x faster internet. Lastly, Google also plans on delivering these speeds to as many as 500,000 Americans. We don’t know when they plan on fully releasing the service, but boy I can’t wait.
